Postal users disappointed by delay in postal liberalization
Brussels, 19 June 2007
The Postal Users Group (PUG) expressed disappointment about the further
delay in the liberalization of the postal market following the vote in
the Transport Committee of the European Parliament yesterday. MEPs
rejected the Commission’s proposal of confirming 2009 as the fixed
deadline for monopolies and opted for 2 – 4 years before liberalization
for the dominant postal operators finally takes place.
PUG has throughout stressed the need for the Public Postal Operators (PPOs)
to focus on user needs – such as small and large publishers, e-commerce
providers and direct marketers - to achieve the full potential of the
sector. This is a message that PPOs working in liberalized – or soon to
be liberalized – markets are taking to heart, and are working with users
to launch innovative new products and services that help grow mail
volumes and provide a sustainable future for universal service.
Commenting on the vote, Per Mortensen, Chairman of the PUG, noted that
“if the extra years of monopoly permit the operators to delay the
transformation of their businesses to partner with their customers, then
the politicians will have done no-one – least of all the operators
themselves – any favors”.
